Power of vulnerability

Saw Brené Brown on the CBS morning show today. I thought you might enjoy her TED talk.I share it so we can all develop our courage, compassion, and connection. Her Netflix show, Brené Brown: The Call to Courage, is here.

Wayne Thiebaud

In my continuing efforts to introduce pretties into our daily lives, here's an interview with one of my favorite American painters, Wayne Thiebaud. This one is thanks to New York's Morgan Library & Museum. I'm not sure if I've ever seen one of his works in the flesh. I might have seen this one @ the National Gallery. I'm happy to say at the time I write this, he's still alive.

Anyway, as with most art interviews the works displayed on the screen behind the participants are probably best seen in person but you can't have everything. Where would you put it?

If you want to see more, please take a look @ this.

Solitude

One of my favorite yarn vendors, Habu, forwarded this Pablo Neruda poem to her newsletter.

Keeping Quiet

Now we will count to twelve
and we will all keep still
for once on the face of the earth,
let’s not speak in any language;
let’s stop for a second,
and not move our arms so much.
It would be an exotic moment
without rush, without engines;
we would all be together
in a sudden strangeness.

Fishermen in the cold sea
would not harm whales
and the man gathering salt
would not look at his hurt hands.

Those who prepare green wars,
wars with gas, wars with fire,
victories with no survivors,
would put on clean clothes
and walk about with their brothers
in the shade, doing nothing.

What I want should not be confused
with total inactivity.
Life is what it is about;
I want no truck with death.

If we were not so single-minded
about keeping our lives moving,
and for once could do nothing,
perhaps a huge silence
might interrupt this sadness
of never understanding ourselves
and of threatening ourselves with death.
Perhaps the earth can teach us
as when everything seems dead
and later proves to be alive.

Now I’ll count up to twelve
and you keep quiet and I will go.

blue

A favorite Joni Mitchell song with lyrics appropriate for today:

Well there's so many sinking now
You've got to keep thinking
You can make it through these waves

Here are them all:

Blue, songs are like tattoos
You know I've been to sea before
Crown and anchor me
Or let me sail away
Hey Blue, THERE is a song for you
Ink ON A Pin
Underneath the skin
An empty space to fill in
Well there's so many sinking now
You've got to keep thinking
You can make it through these waves
Acid, booze, and ass
Needles, guns, and grass
Lots of laughs, lots of laughs
Everybody's saying that hell's the hippest way to go
Well I don't think so
But I'm gonna take a look around it though
Blue, I love you

Blue, here is a shell for you
Inside you'll hear a sigh
A foggy lullaby
There is your song from me

Stay safe, step up, stay home

A couple videos I think you might enjoy. The first is Jim Gaffney's essay from this week's CBS Sunday morning.

This one is a Voguing sent up from Chris Mann. Oh. He's from "The Voice." Too bad.

Too good not to share. This from my eldest sister, Jan:

La grippe

Had to share this with you:

And of course you must hear the original:

More pretties

Heard on The PBS Newshour last night that they'd compiled a list of "immersive" online museum offerings so here they are. Happy to see that all the Smithsonian museums have such things, Our tax dollars at work. I checked out art of carpet making (it's a slide show) and the one on Coco Chanel's LBD (below).

Turns out the one one on Yale's Center for British Art.isn't as user-friendly as it might have been - kinda gotta know what to search for. :| So here's what they have on Beardsley & Burnes Jones.

Happy sleuthing.

Being seen

These days we could all use some pretties in our lives. Here is a recent Met Museum video about Native American art in its collection. I'm embarrassed to say I don't even know where these galleries are there. Makes me want to make some beaded shawls in honor of her piece.

I'm also proud to have one of Porfirio Gutiérrez' rugs in our living room. He has a workshop in Oaxaca, Mexico and the Smithsonian has his rugs in their collection.

Porfirio gave a talk on his workshop's dyeing techniques at Harvard a few years ago. I'm glad I was able to be there.

Hannah Einbinder

Pronounced Eyen bye nder for some reason. I would have thought Eyen bin der.

Unfortunately can't embed it by you can catch her recent Late Show appearance by clicking on this link. Watch out for her.

For the time being I'm going to drive to teach & to MD appts. rather than take public transportation. The CBS MD guy whose name escapes me suggested that anyone over 65 self-isolate for safety's sake - and England's PM has suggested the same. No such guidance from our President, but that's no surprise. The Covid 19 tests are "perfect' just like the letter & the phone call. He said so. In the same conversation. :|

How the other half (er, the top .1%) live(s)

So I could monitor if/when BA went to their all-aisle-access in business class (they did), I signed up with this luxury travel blog.

Here's his latest about vintage first class on Thai Airways.

I guess airplane toilets are pretty much airplane toilets no matter how much the ticket costs. The post-take off stuff starts about 10 minutes in. He usually visits & describes the airport lounges first. So if that floats your boat, start from the beginning.
