No more?

OK. Today will be all about musicals. There are lyrics, so keep scrolling if you want to see the whole thing.

First, the song "No More" that Jake Gyllenhal mentioned on The Late Show last night. (He said it was his favorite Sondheim song):

BAKER
No more questions,
Please.
No more tests.
Comes the day you say, "What for?"
Please- no more.
MYSTERIOUS MAN
They disappoint,
They disappear,
They die but they don't...
BAKER
What?
MYSTERIOUS MAN
They disappoint
In turn, I fear.
Forgive, though, they won't...BAKER
No more riddles.
No more jests.
No more curses you can't undo,
Left by fathers you never knew.
No more quests.
No more feelings.
Time to shut the door.
Just- no more.
MYSTERIOUS MAN
Running away- let's do it,
Free from the ties that bind.
No more depair
Or burdens to bear
Out there in the yonder.
Running away- go to it.
Where did you have in mind?
Have to take care:
Unless there's a "where,"
You'll only be wandering blind.
Just more questions.
Different kind.
Where are we to go?
Where are we ever to go?
Running away- we'll do it.
Why sit around, resugned?
Trouble is, son,
The farther you run,
The more you feel undefined
For what you've left undone
And, nore, what you've left behind.
We disappoint,
We leave a mess,
We die but we don't...
BAKER
We disappoint
In turn, I guess.
Forget, though, we won't...
BOTH
Like father, like son.
BAKER
No more giants
Waging war.
Can't we just pursue out lives
With out children and our wives?
'Till that happy day arrives,
How do you ignore
All the witches,
All the curses,
All the wolves, all the lies,
The false hopes, the goodbyes,
The reverses,
All the wondering what even worse is
Still in store?
All the children...
All the giants...
No more.

I confess I don't remember this from the performance Andy, our friend Sue Szot, and I saw back in the day on Broadway. I'd bought the tickets months before as a b'day present for Andy and it just happened that the original cast, Bernatette Peters, Joanne Carson, et al., had all returned for a filming for PBS and it was the last night of their being together so Ms. Peters was stage stealing like nobody;s business like, when she wasn't singing, hiking up her skirt little by little just to draw attention to herself. Priceless.

This is the opening number of that amazing musical, Six, this rendition put together by cast members from all over the world where it's touring in honor (?) of all the stay-at-home orders:

"Ex-Wives"
(from "Six: The Musical (Studio Cast Recording)" soundtrack)

[Catherine Of Aragon:]
Divorced

[Anne Boleyn:]
Beheaded

[Jane Seymour:]
Died

[Anne Of Cleves:]
Divorced

[Katherine Howard:]
Beheaded

[Catherine Parr:]
Survived

[Catherine Of Aragon:]
And tonight we are

[All:]
Live

[Catherine Of Aragon:]
Listen up, let me tell you a story

[Anne Boleyn:]
A story that you think
You've heard before

[Jane Seymour:]
We know you know our names
And our fame and our faces

[Anne Of Cleves:]
Know all about the glories
And the disgraces

[Katherine Howard:]
I'm done 'cause all this time
I've been just one word
In a stupid rhyme

[Catherine Parr:]
So I picked up a pen and a microphone

[All:]
History's about to get overthrown

[Catherine Of Aragon:]
Divorced

[Anne Boleyn:]
Beheaded

[Jane Seymour:]
Died

[Anne Of Cleves:]
Divorced

[Katherine Howard:]
Beheaded

[Catherine Parr:]
Survived

[All:]
But just for you tonight
We're divorced, beheaded
LIVE!
Welcome to the show
To the historemix
Switching up the flow
As we add the prefix
Everybody knows that
We used to be six wives
Raising up the roof
Till we hit the ceiling
Get ready for the truth
That we'll be revealing
Everybody knows
That we used to be six wives
...but now we're ex-wives

[Catherine Of Aragon:]
All you ever hear
And read about

[Anne Boleyn:]
Is our ex and the way it ended

[Jane Seymour:]
But a pair doesn't beat a royal flush

[Anne Of Cleves:]
You're gonna find out
How we got unfriended

[Katherine Howard:]
Tonight we gonna do ourselves justice
'Cause we're taking you to court

[Catherine Parr:]
Every Tudor Rose has its thorns
And you're gonna hear 'em live in consort

[Catherine Of Aragon:]
Divorced

[Anne Boleyn:]
Beheaded

[Jane Seymour:]
Died

[Anne Of Cleves:]
Divorced

[Katherine Howard:]
Beheaded

[Catherine Parr:]
Survived

[All:]
But just for you tonight
We're divorced, beheaded
Live!
Welcome to the show
To the historemix
Switching up the flow
As we add the prefix
Everybody knows that
We used to be six wives
Dancing to the beat
Till the break of day. Once
We're done, we'll start again
Like it's the Renaissance
Everybody knows
That we used to be six wives
...but now we're ex-wives

Divorced

[Catherine Of Aragon:]
My name is Catherine Of Aragon
Was married 24 years, I'm a paragon
Of royalty, my loyalty is to the Vatican
So if you try to dump me
You won't try that again

[All:]
Beheaded

[Anne Boleyn:]
I'm that Boleyn girl
And I'm up next, see
I broke England from the Church
Yeah, I'm that sexy
Why did I lose my head?
Well my sleeves may be green
But my lipstick's red!

[All:]
Died

[Jane Seymour:]
Jane Seymour, the only one he truly loved

[All:]
Rude

[Jane Seymour:]
When my son was newly born
I died, but I'm not what I seem
Or am I?
Stick around and you'll
Suddenly see more...

[All:]
Divorced

[Anne Of Cleves:]
Ich bin Anna of Cleves

[All:]
Ja

[Anne Of Cleves:]
When he saw my portrait he was like...

[All:]
Jaa

[Anne Of Cleves:]
But I didn't look as good
As I did in my pic
Funny how we all discuss that
But never Henry's little...

[Katherine Howard:]
Prick up your ears, I'm the Katherine
Who lost her head

[All:]
Beheaded

[Katherine Howard:]
For my promiscuity outside of wed
Lock up your husbands
Lock up your sons
K Howard is here
And the fun's begun

[All:]
Survived

[Catherine Parr:]
Five down, I'm the final wife
I saw him to the end of his life
I'm the survivor, Catherine Parr
I bet you wanna know how I got this far
I said I bet you wanna know
How we got this far

[All:]
Do you wanna know how we got this far?
Then welcome to the show
To the historemix
Switching up the flow
As we add the prefix
Everybody knows that
We used to be six wives
Get your hands up
Get this party buzzing
You want a queen Bee
Well there's half a dozen
Everybody knows that
We used to be six wives
But now we're ex-wives!

One
Two
Three
Four
Five

SIX!

Aesthetic movement

I love this period. And visited these galleries for the first time on my January 2020 trip to visit Margi & Michael. Can't say I remember seeing these pieces. At the very least it's worth watching for the discussion on the Tiffany opal pendant.

I'm so grateful for museums offering these great chances to see pretty things in their collections even when they're closed. Gonna go now to see if there are more "Curator's Cuts" in my inbox. There are several related videos on the web page below the one that this video is on.

The Richter one looks especially promising, especially since it's unlikely many folks will see it given its March-July 2020 calendar. :| This one's pretty much just a gallery tour without any discussion/explanation. They did their best to show some of the brushwork but I really wish I could see the things in person. The show must be at the soon-to-be-abandonded-by-the-Met Breuer bldg.

There are some pieces of his at Harvard's Fogg gallery, too. Sad to say none seem to be on display. Guess it wouldn't matter anyway these days.

Inside out

Some photos from inside and of the outside taken in the last few days (the snowy ones were this AM). The cat photo shows a brief moment's truce.

2020-04-16 neighbornood toddle

Went out early (c. 7:30A) today to avoid crowds. Started with our sweet neighborhood park, Mother's Rest, and made my way down Larchmont St., up Waldeck St., and then up Tremlett. It was cloudy when I started and by the end, symbolically, I think, the sun came out.

Hope you like.

Signs of the times

I think people sometimes feel like this these days.

The opposite of the above.

What Andy and I like to call Tremlett flats.
We're at the top of the hill

Where there's a will, there's a way

You can almost see the species tulips Andy planted

Home again, home again, jiggety jig

Nowt so queer as folk

What people won't come up with while staying home.

'Tis true, 'tis true, there's nowt so queer as folk. :)

And in case you want something soothing to accompany your quarantine activities, there's this, which is what I like to think is like what my Shetland Ravelry friend's environment sounds like.

We'll meet again

Meant to send this shortly after Queen Elizabeth's recent speech that referred to this popular-in-Britain WWII song. But didn't get a roundtuit. Hope it lifts your spirits.

Who knew?

One of my favorite Midler songs was by John Prine who died of Covie-19 this week.

"Hello In There"

We had an apartment in the city.
Me and my husband liked living there.
It's been years since the kids have grown,
a life of their own, left us alone.

John and Linda live in Omaha.
Joe is somewhere on the road.
We lost Davy in the Korean war.
I still don't know what for, don't matter any more.

You know that old trees just grow stronger,
and old rivers grow wilder every day,
but old people, they just grow lonesome
waiting for someone to say,
"Hello in there. Hello"

Me and my husband, we don't talk much anymore.
He sits and stares through the backdoor screen.
And all the news just repeats itself
like some forgotten dream
that we've both seen.

Someday I'll go and call up Judy.
We worked together at the factory.
Ah, but what would I say when she asks what's new?
Say, "Nothing, what's with you?
Nothing much to do."

You know that old trees just grow stronger,
and old rivers grow wilder every day,
ah, but, but old people, they just grow lonesome
waiting for someone to say,
"Hello in There. Hello."

So if you're walking down the street sometime
and you should spot some hollow ancient eyes,
don't you pass them by and stare
as if you didn't care.
Say, "Hello in there. Hello."

Neighborhood toddle

Decided to go out for a neighborhood toddle around 8 this AM for the first time since sometime last week hoping there'd be fewer folks on the road, er sidewalk, then and didn't want to wait for the rain forecast for 10ish knowing there'd be fewer then. Had do dodge a few people on the way back but not too many.

Here are some photos I shot en route. Featuring a new kind of litter, some spring-colored houses, and turkeys in our side yard. They've been here for several months now, making occasional appearances. We thought "How neat." Until they started eating the buds off the tulips that is. Andy planted a bunch of new ones last fall so having them literally nipped in the bud is not something to be encouraged. The tom is big enough, he'd probably charge Andy if he went out to shoo them away, =80

Our house is a very, very nice house.
The rest of the following are around same.
